What's in the name?
The site name QueenBilqees stems from the meaning of my name Bilikis- Queen of Sheba, an honorable woman or a successful woman (Warning: The Urban Dictionary meaning is hilarious). The choice of the Pen Name 'Bilqees' is my father's fancy way of spelling my name on my books when I was little. Through him, I discovered my interest in writing from childhood and enjoyed going to bookshops with him as a child.
My mother however, helped hone my skill of writing, sharing materials from her 'library', giving me means, time and space, reading my written pieces and creating a safe space for hard conversations with her through letter writing. She also activated and nurtured my proficiency (written and spoken) of the Yoruba language, which I will forever treasure. Living in Ishagatedo deepened that Yoruba knowledge, thanks to the elders in the community.
My love of taking photographs is expressed in my posts, all pictures used are from my collection over the past few years.
